In our guild we have those that get involved and those who do not. Many members seem to just want to skate by only doing the bare minimums. We don't want that in this guild. We would like it for every single member to post regularly, and be active in our events. So in order to facilitate that, I've laid out some myths that people have said/used to avoid getting involved as members.
MYTH - "It's not necessary to sign up for events or participate, it's a waste of time. Nothing ever changes and you just waste your time"
TRUTH - Volunteering for events is how we get the manpower to raise money for the guild so we can do lottos, and give-a-ways. The more people participate, the more we can do. If no one signs up for committees, if no one posts interest in events, if no one makes arrangements to participate, then the guild cannot grow, and we end up not as fun as we could be.
MYTH - "Donations are your way to making the guild love you. Just donate lots of money and people will love you regardless."
TRUTH - Donating should be for the sake of donating. If you donate something it goes without saying that "you probably won't get it back". Donate because you like the guild, or make more money then you were expecting. We appreciate donations, but in the end it's involvement we really care about. All to often people throw money at a problem. What we need is folks who are willing to give a hand to actually fix it.
MYTH - "I don't need to post on the forums, I'm cool as it is. Besides I don't get anything out of just posting."
TRUTH - When you don't post on the forums, you don't use your power of voting. The more people who post interest about something the more we talk about it. If the guild is doing something you don't like, when you post, we can change it. The recent cape change was because people voted for it. The more you post and get interested, the more we can devote resources and time to things you really care about. It's not a stretch to say "The more you post and interact with each other, the better the guild will be."
MYTH - "Participating in events is boring. I don't need to join committees because I know how to do everything."
TRUTH - Participating in events is a fun way of meeting and hanging out with other guild members. It gives you valuable leadership experience, and you might end up getting so involved that you can use the experience for a *gasp* resume. Committees are designed so any one person doesn't spend more time then they have available. If you have six people working together on the same project, the time required to make it a smashing success is 1/6th of normal. The more people you have working together the easier it is to make an event really fun and memorable. You spend time with people you might not know and can share experiences. It makes it easier to group with them, or even ask them for help.
If anyone else has any myths they'd like shared or dispelled related to HROC please let us know and we'll get answers to you as soon as possible.
